The Swiss Foundation for UNHCR, Switzerland for UNHCR (CH4U), is the UN Refugee Agency’s national partner for Switzerland. We support UNHCR's mission by mobilizing essential resources and raising awareness on behalf of those who are forced to flee.    

To allow UNHCR to protect forcibly displaced populations, the Foundation needs the support of the Swiss people. Every Franc donated is spent in a responsible and transparent manner, and donations are tax exempt.   

Switzerland for UNHCR also carries out awareness and advocacy initiatives to draw the general public’s attention to the plight of displaced people in the world, and to what UNHCR does to protect them.   

The Foundation is currently looking for a Public and Media Relations Coordinator to join its communications’ team.


Within a growing team, this position reports and is under the responsibility of the Head of Communications.

The selected candidate will be responsible for leading CH4U efforts in media relationsestablishing, maintaining and leveraging a network of media contacts. She/he is also in charge of assisting in the development and implementation of communications strategies, campaigns, events, and other initiatives in support of the organization’s strategic objectives.

Scope of the Assignment

The Public and Media Relations Coordinator will take the following responsibilities:

Public and Media Relations

  •  Establishes, maintains and leverages a network of relevant media contacts in
    Switzerland’s three main linguistic areas

  • Acts as the focal point for enquiries from the press, the public, and other organizations

  • Produces talking points, messages, background information and context, for sharing
    across our organization

  • Ensures frequent and regular news outputs for Switzerland for UNHCR including
    briefing notes, press releases, press kits, fact sheets, press lines, 'if-asked' guidance
    notes, social media outputs, etc. for the different units across our organization

  • Monitors media for Switzerland

  • Creates high-quality media and multimedia content for dissemination in Switzerland, via
    Switzerland for UNHCR’s channels and sometimes UNHCR’s global-level platforms

  • Supports fundraising units in raising media attention on specific campaigns, activities
    or/and emergencies

  • Ensures alignment and operational coordination with press relations activities of
    UNHCR country office and HQ

  • Detects public relations issues as they emerge and address them directly

  • Acts as Switzerland for UNHCR’s spokesperson and public speaker, when relevant

  • Works collaboratively with other units inside and outside of CH4U to produce and/or
    adapt PR content

  • Ensures highest standards of accuracy and editorial content in all external outputs 


The ideal candidate is a passionate, professional, results-oriented individual, with a proven experience in public and media relations in Switzerland. She/he should be at ease evolving in startup mode in a growing organization. Experience with an international not for profit (IGO-INGO) or humanitarian organization would be an asset.

Key competencies 

  • 7 – 8 years’ relevant experience including several at similar level

  • Experience and understanding of the humanitarian, development and
    sustainability sectors a plus

  • Advanced post graduate degree or graduate degree with equivalent in experience to
    reach master level

  • Very strong ability to use initiative, prioritize, multi-task, and work well under pressure
    to meet deadlines

  • Very clear and systematic thinking that demonstrates strong judgment and problemsolving competencies

  • Creative and analytical thinker with strong problem-solving skills 

  • Very well organized and structured with high attention to details, accuracy and results

  • Ability to lead and motivate a team for optimum performance

  • Very strong ability to manage large size projects with delegated budget management

  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills in a fast-paced
    multi-cultural and multilingual environment 

  • Very good capacity to work autonomously as well as a team player

  • Very strong ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders with very strong
    negotiation and advocacy skills

  • Comfortable at participating in the exploration of new areas of activities, challenging
    ideas and projects

  • Very strong capacity establishing a good network of contacts within the Swiss media

Other requirements

  • Knowledge, interest and a strong commitment for the work and mission of UNHCR toward refugees
  • Strong comprehension of the humanitarian sector and international organizations and mastery at evolving within complex organizational settings
  • Excellent command of Swiss German and English. A good command of French is also required for this position. Italian an asset
  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of MS Office applications
