How does a legacy work?

What we pass on is more than just an estate.

It is a part of ourselves.

A legacy is not only for wealthy people. It is a personal, free and reversible decision that allows you to carry your values – solidarity, humanity, justice – beyond your lifetime.

And your family always remains protected under Swiss law.

Download our free guide to learn, at your own pace, how a will can become a gesture of trust and hope.

The essentials in 5 points:

  • Your family always comes first.
  • Your will can be amended at any time.
  • You don’t need to be rich: even a small gesture has a real impact.
  • The process is simple: a handwritten will is sufficient in most cases.
  • Switzerland for UNHCR is recognized as a public-benefit organization and exempt from inheritance tax.

Yasmine Lamot, Legacy Manager, is here for you.

What are the benefits of making a will?

If there is no will, the law determines who inherits what. If the result does not reflect your wishes, you can adjust the distribution of your estate (while respecting the legal compulsory shares) and ensure that your assets are allocated according to your plans rather than the statutory rules. A will allows you to bequeath part of your estate to people or organizations you care about.

Every day, families are forced to flee wars, persecution or disasters.

Thanks to solidarity, they find shelter, protection and a future.

Your legacy – whatever its size – can change lives.

3,000 CHF
Water and food for a refugee couple for one year.
20,000 CHF
A clean water point for 1,000 displaced people.
60,000 CHF
A four-classroom school in South Sudan.
100,000 CHF
Dignified emergency shelter for 300 refugee families.

“A legacy is a freedom we give ourselves – to choose, to adapt, to pass on in our own way.”

Does a will only make sense if you have lots of assets?

No matter your circumstances, whether you have extensive assets or few possessions, a will is essential. If you appoint Switzerland for UNHCR in your will as an heir or a legatee, even the smallest amount can make a positive change to the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people.

Can I freely dispose of my estate in my will?

Yes, provided the respect of the compulsory portions regulated by law. If you don’t have any forced heirs, you can freely dispose of your entire estate. Use our free inheritance calculator.
