Among the 120 million forcibly displaced people worldwide are talented artisans whose cultural heritage and skills create objects of extraordinary beauty. When people are forced to flee, they leave behind homes, communities and livelihoods. Often they find themselves in precarious situations with no choice but to rely on humanitarian support. MADE51, an initiative by UNHCR, believes it doesn’t have to be like this.
MADE51 creates opportunities for refugees to earn income through dignified work that makes use of their valuable skills, traditions, and heritage by connecting them to global markets.
MADE51 creates opportunities for refugees to earn income through dignified work that makes use of their valuable skills, traditions, and heritage by connecting them to global markets. They work with 3,700+ artisans in 23 countries, in collaboration with a network of 35 social enterprise partners. Over 85% of artisans are women who support an estimated 16,000+ beneficiaries. MADE51 shows the positive contributions of refugees, while building strong partnerships for economic inclusion and introducing unique products to the marketplace. They help grow local ethical enterprises, keeping traditions at the heart of their activities and products. Earning a living is one of the most dignified ways refugees can rebuild their lives.
This holiday season, MADE51 proudly introduces its Holiday Collection, featuring 24 exquisite, handcrafted ornaments. Among the highlights are delicately embroidered ornaments in festive shapes like stars, hearts, and doves, handmade by Afghan refugee women in Pakistan, Syrian refugees in Lebanon or Sudanese refugees living in Egypt. These artists use traditional embroidery techniques passed down through generations, creating unique patterns that reflect their rich cultural heritage and remarkable skills. Thoughtfully designed and beautifully packaged, these ornaments are the perfect way to spread hope and joy during the holidays.
